Professor Tom Lenaerts presents his work with 101 Genomes to Her Majesty the Queen of Belgium

On October 1st, Professor Tom Lenaerts addressed the topic “The Promise of AI in Medicine… and Our Own Ambitions to Help Marfan Syndrome Patients” during the Third AI in Medicine Symposium hosted by Her Majesty the Queen of Belgium.

Professor Tom Lenaerts has been involved in the 101 Genomes Foundation‘s search for modifier genes since its inception, and the development of his AI-powered bioinformatics tools for oligogenic diseases has been closely intertwined with our mission.

At the 101 Genomes Foundation, we have witnessed first-hand how advances in genomics, bioinformatics, and AI can open new perspectives for families living with rare diseases. What was once invisible in genetic data can increasingly be identified, interpreted, and connected thanks to innovative computational approaches.

Professor Lenaerts shared how these technologies may help improve our understanding of Marfan syndrome and related genetic conditions, a field in which collaboration among patients, clinicians, geneticists, and AI researchers is essential.

We are deeply grateful to Professor Tom Lenaerts for supporting the 101 Genomes Foundation‘s search for Marfan modifier genes and are very proud of his presentation today in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen of Belgium, which emphasized the importance of placing patients at the center of scientific innovation.
